I took off a star for the noise. Anything you buy will be always be just as noisy. I actually like these better than the $70 pet clippers I bought from Amazon & I was desperate for ones that could cut through my long haired cat’s fur without hurting him.The first step is the blade adjustment, which is the black band 2-3 inches under the clipper blade. Move it to the left or right to make the blade cut shorter or longer. The number tells u how short the fur is: smaller numbers mean shorter fur. Once I figured this out, I finally understood how the reviews said they could “cut through hair like butter.”The second most important step is cutting against the grain vs with the grain. I never know which one is which. So run it carefully through a test section. If it doesn’t cut, turn the clippers 180 degrees in your hand & try cutting that same section of fur again. You will notice one way doesn’t cut at all & the other slices it off. When it slices it off, keep the clippers in that direction & go at it.You also have to keep your pet’s temperament in mind. My cat let me do it a little at a time. So I did the neck flouff collar a little at a time…then I let him rest…& then I go again. Why? B/c your cat will move! And you do not want to risk shaving off whiskers or hurting them. So make sure you always have a hand covering the whiskers (or other sensitive areas like shoulders/hip bones) completely, then use your other hand to get whatever area you can. My cat was much calmer that way & knew I was protecting him from the blade.I cannot stress that enough, your cat’s comfort is key! If they’re comfortable, it will make your entire job easier!
